It is important to know when behavioural modification is required and when training is required. Whilst intertwined, they are different.
Training is all about teaching new behaviours such as sit, leave, drop and stay, loose-lead walking etc. Important skills that help dogs live in our very demanding world. We can make this fun for us and our dogs using games and rewards. Puppy classes, obedience and good citizen classes are good examples of this.
Behaviour modification is more about changing existing unwanted behaviours. It is important to understand why a dog is feeling the way he does, and this requires knowledge of emotions and psychology. For example, why a dog is barking and lunging at the other dogs he sees on his walks and what can we do to help him feel happier and more relaxed around other dogs.
